Pacey and finalists Mike Rommelse (Aus), Mattia Morri (Italy), Sodok (Ind), Tai Graham (Aus) and Tipi Jabrik (Ind) surfed their way through a field of 50 contestants that included Australians, Hawaiians, Italians, Americans, Indonesians, and one German to end up battling it out in the 25 minute final.

The surfers ran the gamut from ex-world tour pro surfers (Rommelse) and well-known free surfers Pacey, Mikala Jones, Daniel Jones, and Mark Matthews to expat locals Tai Graham, Kane Faint, Andy Campbell, and Harry Radcliffe, as well as Indonesia’s Tipi Jabrik, Made Kina, Sodok, and Jeren Kiring (the youngest competitor at 14), and then just a bunch of normal everyday surfers who were attracted by the idea of joining in a retro surfing event at Canggu.

The oldest competitor was Philip Coral, in his 60’s, who made it all the way into the semifinals.  He also was the proud recipient of the Donut Award for best wipout! The weather and surfing conditions were certainly less than ideal, with the sun refusing to appear and the threat of rain on the horizon most of the day, combined with sideshore winds and 2-3 foot waves.

But nobody was bothered much, and what resulted was one of the most fun and memorable events on record for contestants and spectators alike. It was an eclectic collection of surfers and surfboards that came to join in the event, billed a “retro” event, as they were required to follow a couple of rules:  First, their surfboards must be a pre-1982 design, and second, must be either single fin or twin fin.

The boards could be old or new, but they must follow those two rules in order to be allowed. Throughout the day’s surfing heats that began at just before 10 am and finished up at 5:30 pm, the contestants were allowed to use their board of choice, some borrowing and swapping from each other just for a change.

But for the final, the organizers decided to mix things up a bit, choosing six surfboards and numbering them from one to six.  Then each finalist had to draw a straw to determine which board they would be riding, starting from the shortest (1) to the longest (6).  It was great fun and an interesting twist that made for a challenging and entertaining final!

After the horn blew and the event shirts were hung up for the day, everybody left the beach and headed to the Deus Gallery and Temple of Enthusiasm for the trophy presentation and after-party festivities. It was actually the opening party for the venue together with a very cool Single Fin Art Exhibition, so there were plenty of drinks and finger foods and the place was jam packed in record time.

Needless to say, the after party went off the hook! In addition to the surfing awards that included the Deus surfboard and various framed vintage photos given to the finalists, there were also fun awards given in a few different categories:

The Froggy Award for shortest shorts – Shane Dawson
The Michael Peterson Award for best cutback – Daniel Jones
The Bohdi Award for the biggest wave – Mike Rommelse

With the success of this year’s event, it’s safe to say that you can look forward to seeing this become an annual institution for years to come. Family of 11 lived nomadic surf lifestyle

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 18 August, 2010 : – - Nine children, a battered camper van and two decades of summer: the incredible story of a passionate, unconventional idealist, the world’s most famous surfing family and a utopia that was too beautiful for reality.

As Dorian ‘Doc’ Paskowitz speaks, the ocean is reflected in his face. Furrowed wrinkles branded by the sun meet pacific blue eyes. His flow of words washes away anything that isn’t anchored down well enough. Money? “The root of all evil.” Success? “What comes easily is worth nothing.” War? “A consequence of bad sex.”

Paskowitz is 89 and a passionate surfer, Jew, dreamer, despot, revolutionary and Samaritan. But first and foremost Doc is husband to Juliette and father to David, Jonathan, Abraham, Izzy, Moses, Adam, Salvador Daniel, Navah and Joshua Ben. For two decades he drove around America with them in a tiny mobile home, always on the lookout for good waves.

If he liked a place, he taught his kids to surf there. He did this so well that in the 1970s the Paskowitzes weren’t just the most famous surfing family in the world, they were also dominating youth competitions all over the country. And that was pretty much all they did. Doc’s daughter and eight sons went through childhood with no school, no homework, no stress. Doc created paradise on earth for his kids. Or at least his version of it.

“We were happy when we had nothing. The misery began when we started wanting things,” Doc explains in the first shot of Surfwise, the brilliant documentary about his life. It serves as a perfect potted summary of his 89 years, for Dorian Paskowitz professed ‘not wanting to have things’ as a rule for life. The Paskowitzes spent the 1960s and ’70s as surfing nomads.

By night they lived in a 7.2m camper van parked up by the beach. By day they lived in the ocean. Doc sent his children to what he called the school of life rather than real school: the eight boys and their sister learned to surf and to have respect for others and their own bodies.

“You can’t get health out of a bottle. You’ve got to work for it,” Doc, a qualified medical doctor, would lecture. So unhealthy food was frowned upon, too: in addition to what the family caught themselves, they mainly ate fruit and nothing fatty or sugary. Daily exercise was a matter of course. The Paskowitz family’s fame gradually spread throughout the country.

Their example became the ideal uncompromising life of freedom and adventure. “We had moments of spiritual perfection,” David relates. “We lived a life that all other children envied,” Navah explains. “Not a day went by when we didn’t do something exciting.”

Dorian Paskowitz was in his early 30s when he could no longer suppress the desire for freedom and his complete horror of the petit bourgeois life. It was the 1950s. Doc had a glittering career as a doctor ahead and two failed marriages behind him. He was deeply dissatisfied with life. But then three things happened. First he went to Israel, to the desert, “like Jesus of Nazareth and all the other crazy crackpots, to live like an animal,” for a couple of weeks.

Then he discovered surfing. And finally cunnilingus, “which massively changed my life”. He decided to live out his sexuality, which he hadn’t done to that point. Doc, a lifeguard and stunning-looking at the time, wanted to conquer 100 women and evaluate their horizontal qualities with the cool objectivity of the scientist.

But it all stopped after he gave full marks to number 25: Juliette became his third wife and spent the next 10 years “permanently pregnant or breastfeeding” and she remains the love of his life.

Come raggiungere lo Spot? Da Putzu Idu seguire le indicazioni per Sa Mesa la spiaggia si riconosce subito dalla distanza in cui incominciano a frangiere le onde a volte a più di 500m dalla riva ma l’onda non arriva fino ad essa infatti si ferma molto prima.

La giornata internazionale dedicata al Surfing.
Una giornata che è occasione per far conoscere il surfing, la sua cultura ed il suo mondo ad un pubblico ampio, evento nato per condividere la nostra passione per il mare ed i suoi elementi.
La Manifestazione, di carattere Internazionale, organizzata dall’Eurosima (European Boardsports Industry Manufacturers Association) e promossa dall ESF (European Surfing Federation) e da Surfrider Foudation, si svolge ogni anno nei più importanti luoghi di pratica del Surf in tutto il mondo.

L’Is benas Surf Club, il primo Surf Camp e Scuola di Surf del Mediterraneo dal 1997, organizzerà per il terzo anno consecutivo, il Surfing Day nell’Area surfistica di Capo Mannu, Costa ovest Sardegna, proponendo Lezioni gratuite di Surf ai bambini, introduzione al surf da onda per tutti, e, in collaborazione con il noto shaper italiano Marco Rizzo (Dr.Ank) un clinic sulla costruzione delle Tavole da surf. Verranno inoltre presentati i modelli della ampia produzione custom di Dr.ank con la possibilita’ di far provare ai surfer, gratuitamente, tutte le tavole a disposizione.
